2013 Beetle Convertible Spy Shot – VW Southtowne Utah

Get ready, middle school art teachers – your new car is almost here. Following the launch of the re-skinned 2012 Beetle, Volkswagen is hard at work prepping the new droptop variant, seen here testing in a not-so-convertible-friendly environment.

The signature styling difference that separates the 2012 Beetle from the Bug that came before it is indeed the longer, flatter roofline, and it’s interesting to see how well the shape has been kept intact during the transformation from hardtop to droptop. This test mule is fitted with the front and rear fascias of the last-generation car, but make no mistake, the decidedly more masculine fore and aft lighting treatments will indeed carry over to the new convertible.

Much like the coupe, we can expect the Beetle Convertible to be available with Volkswagen’s 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine as standard kit. There’s no word about whether or not the 2.0-liter turbo-four will make its way under the hood of the new convertible, but what really piques our interest is that Volkswagen sources have pretty much confirmed that the topless Beetle will be available with the 2.0-liter TDI unit, making it the first (and currently, only) diesel droptop in the United States. Expect to see the production car debut at the New York Auto Show this April.

2013 VW Beetle TDI – VW Southtowne Utah

The Volkswagen Beetle is known for inducing smiles, and the latest addition to the Beetle family is no exception. Today at the Chicago Auto Show Volkswagen announced that a TDI Clean Diesel model of the 2013 Beetle will be available this summer.

The 2013 Beetle TDI is the first TDI Clean Diesel Beetle we’ve offered since 2006, but we think you’ll agree that it was worth the wait. It’s the most fuel-efficient Beetle yet, with a predicted fuel economy of 29 mpg city and 39 mpg highway. Besides its excellent efficiency, what sets this model apart is what’s under the hood.

The Beetle TDI makes the most of Volkswagen’s innovative 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injection Clean Diesel engine, which puts out 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. That’s great news for your right foot, because all that extra torque equals substantially more responsive driving.

We don’t use the term “Clean Diesel” lightly. Like our other TDI models, the Beetle TDI features an exhaust system with a particulate filter and no less than three catalytic converters: one for oxidation, one for oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and one for hydrogen sulfide. For those of you who aren’t chemistry majors, that means that engine emissions are reduced. For that, we can all breathe easier.

The Beetle TDI will be available in three trim levels, including a TDI with Sunroof and a TDI with Sunroof, Sound, and Navigation. All three levels are very nicely equipped, with standard features like power windows with one-touch up/down; cruise control; V-Tex Leatherette seating; the Kaeferfach secondary glove box; Bluetooth®; a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with audio controls; three auxiliary gauges; Keyless entry with push-button start; and a Media Device Interface with iPod® cable.
Be sure to stop by the Volkswagen booth at the Chicago Auto Show to get an up-close look at the all-new 2013 Beetle TDI.

The ultimate Beetle experience at the Detroit Auto Show – VW Southtowne Utah

The only thing better than a Beetle is three Beetles. With that in mind, Volkswagen showcased three distinctive Beetles at this year’s Detroit Auto Show: the 2012 Beetle and two concept vehicles, the E-Bugster and Beetle Fender.

The E-Bugster, an all-electric take on the Beetle, combines classic design with forward-thinking innovation; the end result is nothing short of awesome. Part of the Volkswagen Blue-E-Motion line, this concept car is fun-filled and emission-free. It combines all the joy of driving with none of the environmental impact.

Our other concept car, the Beetle Fender, will go down in history as the Most Rockin’ Beetle Ever. A tribute to music fans and guitar lovers everywhere, the cabin is lined with genuine wood trim finished in Fender’s signature Sunburst coloration. The Fender sound system offers light-colored mesh like you’d find on an old Fender amplifier (with an iPhone dock in the middle), and the HVAC controls are metalized, harkening back to old amp knobs. Best of all, there’s a tube amp on top of the dash. A quarter-inch socket and tone adjustments are located in the hatch area, so you can plug in your guitar, play it through the subwoofer and rock out wherever you go.

And of course, no Beetle party would be complete without the 2012 Beetle. Redesigned for only the second time in its history, the 2012 Beetle is a fully modern interpretation of the classic Bug. German-engineered with no compromises, the 2012 Beetle offers enhanced driving performance and the highest fuel economy of any Beetle: a combined 33 mpg. The exterior offers a lower, sportier stance with a wider base for better handling and a longer profile for more interior space.

From concept cars to real-world production vehicles, we’re excited to give Beetle fans three reasons to celebrate. You can see all three models at the Detroit Auto Show on display at the Volkswagen booth. And be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for live updates from the show.

The Beetle R is a dream come true – VW Southtowne Utah

Good things come to those who wait. Apparently, so do fast things. In September, we reported on the Volkswagen Beetle R concept car’s debut at the 64th International Motor Show in Frankfurt. It’s holding a stateside coming-out party at the 2011 LA Auto Show.

Like its cousin, the high-performance Golf R, the racing-inspired features on the Beetle R are obvious. The 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels feature five triple spokes and R-design blue brake calipers, and the front bumper consists of three intakes, each highlighted in contrasting “Black High Gloss.” The outer intakes cool the brakes, while the middle intake supplies the engine with air. The Beetle R also has a spoiler up front, inspired by flat splitters found on racecars. Two sets of dual pipes make the Beetle R look like it’s going fast even when it’s standing still, and when it’s not standing still, add a sporty exhaust note. A wider stance gives the Beetle R a more aggressive look; the front and rear bumpers have been reworked and widened by 1.2 inches, while the fenders are 0.6 inches wider on either side. And we hate to see the Beetle R leave, but we love to watch it go, thanks in part to the newly redesigned aerodynamic rear bumper with air exhaust vents that are integrated with a diffuser in the lower bumper area to improve downforce. In other words, it will help keep the Beetle R grounded at high speeds, and please believe that the Beetle R loves high speeds.

Sure, the Beetle R looks great from the outside, but it’s once you get inside it that the real fun starts.  All seats are embossed with the R logo, and the dual motorsport bucket seats up front have gray nubuck leather inserts, while the back seats are upholstered in black Nappa leather. The entire instrument panel has been redesigned and boasts a central tachometer and auxiliary gauges, while the real party-starter—the gas pedal—is covered in brushed aluminum. (Editor’s note: the brake pedal, while not nearly as fun, is covered in the same material.)

See the Beetle R for yourself at the LA Auto Show. If you can’t make it to LA, don’t worry—this won’t be the last time the Beetle R makes it way to the US.

2012 VW Beetle – 10 Things To Live About The New Beetle – VW Southtowne

The all-new Volkswagen Beetle is a modern take on the most lovable car the world has ever known. It’s been redesigned from the inside out, and with so many changes, you may have missed a few new features. Fear not, Beetle fans, for we’ve outlined 10 things to love about the 2012 Beetle.

  1. It boasts a more powerful, sporty look. In the words of VW design brand chief Klaus Bischoff, “The Beetle is now characterized by a clean, self-confident and dominant sportiness.” Nice work, Klaus.
  2. It offers two engine options. Choose between the 2.5L gasoline five-cylinder model and the 2.0L TSI turbocharged gasoline engine—you can’t go wrong.
  3. It has several transmission options. The 2.5L models come with a 5-speed manual or optional 6-speed automatic. Our acclaimed Direct-Shift Gearbox® 6-speed dual-clutch transmission is an option on the 2.0L TSI turbocharged model, while the 6-speed manual transmission comes standard.
  4. It comes with a Kaeferfach glove box. As a nod to the classic Bug, the new Beetle features a second glove box—the Kaeferfach—just above the main glove box.
  5. You can add Heritage wheels. Available in 17- and 18-inch options, our aptly named Heritage wheels harken back to the classic Beetle.
  6. Four words: Fender Premium audio system. The sound system is optional, but once you experience its nine speakers, 400 watts of power and crystal-clear sound, you’ll realize that it’s a must-have.
  7. An MP3/iPod adapter is standard. Speaking of audio, it’s easy to connect your MP3, iPod or iPhone to the audio system. You’ll never need to clutter your car with CDs again.
  8. You can match the interior trim to the exterior paint job. If you match your socks to your car’s floor mats, you may want to consider this option.
  9. You can add custom graphics. With Second Skin, a partnership between Volkswagen and Original Wraps, you can add graphics and racing stripes that will make your Beetle look like it’s going fast even when it’s standing still.
  10. The Beetle R is coming to America. Speaking of going fast, the Beetle R , a racing-inspired version of the Beetle, is coming soon. Stay tuned to the Beetle Blog for more info.

2012 VW Beetle A Chip Off The Old Block – VW Southtowne Utah

1951 and 2012 Beetle
Guilty as charged: the 2012 Beetle looks different from models past. We think that’s a good thing. Not that we don’t love the old Bugs—they’ll always have a place in our hearts. It’s just that, well, this new Beetle really is something special. And part of what makes it so special is the obvious connection to its automotive ancestors. From the very first glance, you know that it’s a Beetle.

We sent automotive genealogist (OK, Volkswagen Digital Marketing Manager) Brian Chee to Berlin to get a closer look at the 2012 Beetle and examine what’s different and what makes it a Beetle through and through. Here’s what he had to say:

Yep. You’re right. The 2012 Beetle lacks both a chrome bumper and a split rear window, and its engine is up front. But that doesn’t mean the all-new version wasn’t inspired by one of the bestselling cars ever. In fact, after seeing them side-by-side, I can tell you that the family resemblance is immediately apparent. From the exterior design to interior features meant to reflect the original model’s smart and simple purpose, the inspiration drawn from the past–and applied with a modern interpretation–is clear.

A quick glance at the rear styling of the 2012 VW Beetle reveals its connection to the Beetle’s heritage. Volkswagen Brand Design Chief Klaus Bischoff and team drew inspiration from the original, translating its iconic style into a Beetle for today’s world, with dual exhaust, 19-inch wheels and available features such as a panoramic roof, keyless entry, a lower profile, a longer hood and a steeper front windshield. They also stretched the Beetle 3.3 inches wider and 6 inches longer, creating a more powerful appearance.

1951 Beetle

Check out the rear spoiler, below. With its black top and body color underside, it’s fully integrated into the design of the Beetle, adds to its sporty persona and hints at performance: the 2.0L TSI® turbocharged gasoline engine, pictured here, will be offered with a DSG 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. At 200 hp and 207 lb.-ft of torque, the turbo will be the sportiest Beetle offered–though you’d be hard pressed to say no to the 2012 VW Beetle 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel, thanks to 140 hp and 236 lb.-ft of torque.

The 2012 Beetle

When it comes to a car’s interior, times (and laws) have changed, not to mention technology and comfort. Case in point: while Beetle heritage cues continue with, among other things, available painted dashboards and an additional glove box integrated into the dash, the all-new 2012 Beetle is thoroughly modern and designed from a driver’s point of view.

2012 Beetle Steering Wheel

Framed by two air vents, the selected audio/navigation system is optimally located in the driver’s visual field on the dashboard. Climate controls are situated just below, within easy reach. Key premium features available on the 2012 VW Beetle include the Fender Premium Audio System, which adds an additional subwoofer and 400 watts of output power along with proprietary Panasonic® speaker technology that covers the cabin with directional sound from front door speakers and front dual voice coil speakers.

1951 Beetle Interior

2012 Beetle Interior

I don’t think you’ll get that kind of sound in a classic Beetle, unless you install it yourself. And while the interior of both cars are worlds away in terms of comfort and technology, it’s fair to say that there’s one consistent theme: simplicity. Back in 1951, the Beetle was simple to understand, drive and live with. Today’s Beetle’s interior is a great example of simple, refined design meant to be enjoyed by passenger and driver.
